I begin with something that is captivating. I try to capture its immediacy. To create an illusion that is, with patience and doggedness, able to reach a deep felt part of ourselves, while resisting the temptation to make the image too pretty, colourful or abstract. To paint what Robert Hughes calls “slow art … art that holds time as a vase holds water.”
