I am an amateur photographer focused primarily on rather realistic pictures of the natural world and somewhat abstract representations of everything.
If you're interested, this is MY BORING PHOTO BIO. My first camera was a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye, around 1952. (When I first tried to develop a roll of 620 film from this camera, I carefully loaded my plastic tank in a pitch dark closet under the basement stairs, added and drained all the chemicals, only to discover that the film was on the floor, and the protective paper was in the tank! I was a bit more successful later, but the darkroom was never a satisfying place; then, at about 25, I discovered transparencies and never returned to the darkroom. I'd been taught that only B&W photography was real photography, but it seemed obvious that a long trip out to Rocky Mountain National Park would produce more images than I could ever print, so I went with Kodachrome.) I find it interesting that, even at the young age of 8 or 9 years, I was drawn to somewhat abstract subjects, like the pattern of structural beams at a construction site, or the beams at the top of a telephone pole. Soon my dad gave me his Super Baldina, a nice little folding 35mm camera, with a fixed 50mm 2.8 Meyer Gorlitz lens, and separate holes to compose the image and to use the rangefinder. Then, for my 13th birthday I received a Leica IIIf, with the same two holes, and a 50mm 2.8 Summicron lens that I never really appreciated until many years later; in addition, I soon acquired a 135mm Hektor. What I thought I'd learned from these two Leitz lenses was that the 50 was too short, and the 135 too long for my eye. So, when the whole kit was stolen during my junior year of college, I took the insurance money and chose a Nikkorex F over a Canon AE-1, because I was seduced by the "Blowup" lens, the Nikkor 85mm 1.8, the only lens I owned for many many years. A landmark event came a few years later, when I was introduced to Nikon K extension tubes, turning me into a bit of a macro maniac, an affliction I have never been able to shake. I moved up to a Nikon F Photomic, which in turn was stolen, and replaced by a Nikkormat F and another 85mm 1.8 lens around 1970. Then, around 1992, I was convinced to buy a 105mm Micro Nikkor AF-D lens instead of the K tubes, and I had two lenses. In March of 2004 I was convinced to go digital, and I bought a D70, followed by a D300 in March of 2008. Then, in November of 2014, I upgraded to a D810, and added a Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/4G ED VR. In November of 2016, planning a trip to Yosemite, I purchased a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Lens. Lusting for the focus stacking feature of the D850 to feed my macro mania, I traded up in October of 2018.
