Hi,
When Jack London had his portrait made by the noted San Francisco photographer Arnold Genthe, London began the encounter with effusive praise for the photographic art of his friend and fellow bohemian, Genthe. "you must have a wonderful camera...It must be the best camera in the world...You must show me your camera." Genthe then used his standard studio camera to make what has since become a classic picture of Jack London. When the sitting was finished, Genthe could not contain himself: "I have read your books, Jack, and I think they are important works of art. You must have a wonderful typewriter." – Anonymous
No one would think to ask a painter what kind of oils he uses or a sculpture what kind of chisels - but for some reason too many people think good pictures come from good equipment. Photography, like any of the arts, when it becomes art must come from the vision of the photographer and his or her creation of the mood for each shot.
There are many who take snapshots, there are but a few photographers who turn it into an art form. I am NOT saying I am an artist, but as I can't draw, paint or sculpt - taking photos is the thing I can do that is creative in nature.
For anyone who has stumbled on my profile for the first time, I am in my second career doing travel photography. I am pretty fortunate in that I have the opportunity to travel internationally - something I once did only for business. It's a lot nicer when you can smell the roses and get up close and personal with all the beautiful people of this shrinking world.
While all of my travels are posted to my website "Sam's Exotic Travel Photos" at www.samsays.com, I am posting all my new photo albums to Flickr as well - as I have fallen in love with all the wonderful people who share this forum.

Art, for me, is all about the Light in the most literal, but also most figurative, of senses, refracting and colliding, weaving and forking. That place where all roads meet and the one becomes the many and the many the one like a brilliant sun; in that moment, in that instant we sometimes call "eternity" that light shines through as a smiled melody sounding through even the most shattering of sorrows. Right there you have the essence of Sam Stearman... He is a true artist.

Sam’s pictures remind me that to travel is to truly experience life – to be wide-eyed again, to take nothing for granted, to live life in the moment. Sam’s pictures remind me that to travel is to truly experience life – to be wide-eyed again, to take nothing for granted, to live life in the moment. I particularly like his portraits – he’s been to China, India, the Amazon and everywhere in between. It is lovely to see so many different faces and cultures in one photo stream – to celebrate both the diversity and the things we have in common as human beings. His photos make me want to travel more – to experience some of these places first hand. In the meantime, however, I am very grateful for the opportunity to peer over his shoulder and enjoy the colour and vitality vicariously – through the lens of someone that always cares about his subject.

Sam has an amazing eye. He's also going to the places I'd like to go and take the shot's that I'd like to take. A trip through his stream is like flipping through an atlas page by page except with the addition of reality. Sam has an amazing eye. He's also going to the places I'd like to go and take the shot's that I'd like to take. A trip through his stream is like flipping through an atlas page by page except with the addition of reality. The experience of Sam's stream is second only to actually being there - complete with is informative, and often funny commentary.
