anthropologist, filmmaker, photographer, journalist, writer
I have had a long and abiding interest in Polynesian voyaging. I made a film on the subject in 1983 - broadcast on PBS and around the world - called The Navigators. I am finishing a book entitled Hawai'iki Rising which describes the search for ancient astronomical knowledge that was once used to guide powerful canoes across the Pacific, a thousand years before this vast ocean was known to Europeans. To prove that Thor Heyerdahl was wrong in his thesis that Polynesians drifted aboard rafts, replicas of ancient canoes have been built throughout the Pacific and sailed on ancestral voyaging routes. This new knowledge and this powerful experience has led to a general renaissance of Polynesian culture throughout the Pacific.
I have also written about and filmed automobile racing and a variety of other subjects including archeology, underwater exploration, sailing, the environment and "sense of place".
