I'm Irish, but remarkably sober.
A naturalist by nature, with some qualifications thrown in for good measure.
My first camera was from the pound shop, when I was 9. Learned photography the hard way by trying to shoot swallows and dragonflies in flight with a Pentax K1000, which amounted to a lot of expensive missed shots being developed.
Liked digital cameras since using a 1mp Kodak in the late 1990s. It came with a PC and ate four batteries at a time like they were Smarties. Used the family Nikon Coolpix 5600 after that.
Bought a Panasonic Lumix LZ3 to record fieldwork for an MSc (nature conservation) and then discovered bridge cameras, whose versatility has endeared them to me. I love superzooms since getting a Panasonic FZ-18 a few years ago, and like my cameras to be rugged (they need to be!) but easy to carry, with good results. I currently use a Canon SX 510 IS and the slightly larger Canon SX 540 HS.
I consider myself a naturalist who takes photos more than a photographer, but do try to be arty sometimes.
I frequently roam Flickr looking for great talent, and especially like to invite masterpieces that have somehow gone unnoticed, to groups where they'll be properly appreciated. I don't expect reciprocation for doing this, but am always glad to receive comments and invites.
I don't usually reciprocate if people add me as a contact without actually being interested enough to comment on any of the photos in my stream.

By pure chance, I happened to overhear Sam talking to a friend in a hotel in Valletta, Malta last March and heard him say something about Flickr. A conversation developed in the few minutes he had before leaving for the airport but we exchanged Flickr addresses and have been in at least weekly internet conversations since. It appears that we have many of the same interests in wildlife and conservation and close-up photography of small creatures and wild flowers. Not only that, but Sam is one of the most responsive people on Flickr in communicating how much he enjoys seeing photographs of others. He is an excellent contact and a very special internet friend to both my partner, Eglantine, and I. Keep up the great work Sam!
