There are very many good, even excellent, photographers. There are very, very few important photographers. In the 8 years that I have followed Salmonpink, I have become more and more certain of his profound importance. as Artist-Historian of China's transformation, his work is a storm of dizzying change and astonishing beauty lit by flashes of lightning. In a world in which almost everything is new, he reveals timeless grace with a poet's intensity. Then instantly slips into cool objectivity, dark, knowing laughter or generous compassion. He watches the streets with a cynical eye, then conjures up images of staggering romance. He knows life is sordid, tragic, absurd and transcendently beautiful. Salmonpink is an artist in the very deepest sense. In 100 years time they will talk of his Shenzhen as we talk of Paul Martin's London or Weegee's New York. This is work for the ages.
