I have been taking self-portraits as my primary form of artistic expression since 2006, when in August of that year I began the challenge of taking a self-portrait every day for one full year. I ended up doing two years.
The exploration of identity as a woman entering middle age has emerged as a persistent theme in my work. Akin to the stages of grief, I face the idea of aging at first with dread, then resistance, and ultimately acceptance. In my experience, these stages are non-linear.
I have been creating an ongoing series of self-portraits in abandoned buildings since 2007, exploring these concepts in depth.
In January 2012 I embarked on another year-long daily SP challenge, with a personal goal to get out of my comfort zone (for me it was getting over the fear taking self-portraits outside where people were around). After successfully completing a full year, I went into 2013 with the challenge of staying to a theme. I did a new theme each year through 2017.
In 2018 I have decided to stop with the daily self-portraits for a while and focus more energies on my other art and you know, life :)
Be respectful and nice to me, and I'll be respectful and nice to you. :)

I made a magazine of some of my abandoned self-portraits to sell! It is 28 pages, one image per page, and it looks and feels like a nice soft-cover book. Images are all from the past year and a half.
You can see a full preview of every page here: Naked Abandon: Self-Portraits
You can order direct through Blurb for $15 plus shipping by clicking HERE, OR you can pre-order through me and get a signed copy made out to you for $20 including shipping.
Send an email to sarahxbloom@gmail.com if you wish to pre-order and I'll give you information on the various ways you can send payment.
Thank you!

a talented photographer with a voice and taking us on a journey, the images get your attention, the voice makes you think. Thanks for your thoughts, insight and talent.
Sarah, it arrived today! A beautiful little book - the images are very nicely reproduced and presented and it is such a treat to see your work in the old school tactile medium of paper! Thank you and best of luck with this little jewel of a presentation!
Incredible compositions in the self-portrait abandoned arena - capturing natural and unnatural together. Wonderful.
Sarah calls herself sad and beautiful. Sarah calls herself sad and beautiful. She is beautiful, not only to see, but also to "listen to", in some of the causes she take on, in her support for her friends and her family, especially her daughter. But she has a beautiful eye, in the sense of being able to detect what will make a photograph memorable, often because she is able to shock and smile at the same time. I always look forward to what is coming next in her photo stream, especially in her 365 projects, the latest of which is particularly inspired. And brave. Even though they have sometimes jarred with me, Sarah's urban decay photographs are excellently "staged" and always striking.

I don't say this about too many things but I will say it here. I am a fan. Sarah's work is not only beautifully executed, but it is original. I always look forward to her next shot.
I would argue with you about your flickr screen name. With you, it's ALL beautiful...
Sarah is a waterfall in the desert.
i'd like to thank sarah for poping my testimonial cherry.. and ganging up with julie to pick at me.. :P lol but seriously...it's great to see someone who's not afraid to just shoot.. and find beauty in everything she sees.... her images are quite very inspirational...
What a joy to be able to view something someone makes that shakes the parts of myself that I fear are growing hard and unreachable as life takes it's toll from day to day. What a joy to be able to view something someone makes that shakes the parts of myself that I fear are growing hard and unreachable as life takes it's toll from day to day. What a privelege and an honor. I am a proud and arrogant fellow sometimes... and this woman humbles me. These images have brought me to tears (both joy and sadness) and at other times given me the strength to go forward. They have punched me in the gut. And then some of them have softened the harder edges of myself. YOU GO Sarah...

Her best stuff not only pushes all the right technical buttons, but it gets right out there and says, "This is who I am, this is what I am, this is what femininity is, now f--in deal with it." Besides, she's fun. Meet her in person if you can. You'll love her.

I don't know what I would do without her in my life. And a woman that uses Dylan as inspiration for many of her photos is aces in my book. Did I mention the first time I met her, she took off all of her clothes? I did? Oh. Just thought it was worth mentioning again :D

Sarah calls me an artist. Someday, I'll find a way to get back at her for that. But I want to tell you that when I first started pissing around on Flickr, I was really clueless. Until I stumbled onto her site. Here's what I learned from her. Don't pander. Be brave. Say something. Forget about being pretty for pretty's sake. Yeah, she puts her sad and beautiful self on the line. Again and again. Draw a line in the sand and she'll kick it into oblivion. And you don't even notice that something's changed. She drops hints about her past. Which sounds fucked. But she's here today. And the sadness, the pain, the hopelessness of yesterday somehow now is a ray of brightness that proves the future can always be better. Sarah, sad, beautiful, talented, generous, triumpant. I'm glad she lives on the other side of the Commonwealth we call home. I don't think I could stay away from this woman.

I've told Sarah this several times, and now I'm telling the world. One of the greatest things about the 365 Days project is getting a chance to see people grow as photographers from day to day and shot to shot. No one has grown as much as Sarah. Both as photographer and as (her own) model, she's gone from timid and limited to one of my favorite photographers in all of flickr. She grows by leaps and bounds with every single shot, and now its hard to find one that isn't excellent. On top of that, she's gained a certain confidence that comes across in her photos and hopefully in her life as well. I look forward to seeing her photos each and every day.
