I do this just for fun. I love taking pictures, but I sure hate doing the RAW conversion afterward, but it's so worth it to be able to correct my white-balance mistakes.
I love love LOVE the Strobist blog. Learn to jazz up your shots on a shoestring budget, with a ~$150 investment in a used flash, an umbrella stand, and a sync cord you can make yourself for pretty cheap. It's Strobist's Starving Student Off-Camera Light Kit, or the more-and-more-widely-recognized SSO-CLK.
