I discovered photography when he was 10 years old and it has turned into a life-long passion. His photographic work is varied, ranging from documentary photography, landscape and street photography to using his camera to produce abstract images. His documentary photography is published in the book 'Syria, Refugees and Rebels' and was invited to show and discuss his documentary work at Oxford University and Franklin University in Switzerland. Russell collaborates with the AquestArte gallery in Ascona Switzerland. His work is also used to theme a guest room at the Prijeko Palace boutique hotel in Dubrovnik, Croatia. As well as being a photographer he is also a writer with particular interest in politics and the middle east. He has been interviewed by a national Italian radio station as well as by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. His work has also been published several times in a Chinese national newspaper
