My name is Rueven Tan, a Singapore-based photographer who enjoys the simple things that play a role in my work. Photography has gifted me with the power of observation which has opened my eyes to situations that I previously have no feelings or understandings of. My eyes adjust to life as I see it: the beauty and the ugly.It has become my responsibility to capture both sides of the story; one shouldnot only witness the beauty but accept the ugly truths too. By witnessing the ugly side of the world, it has made me feel fortunate with what I have and to never demand more. Instead of complaining about it, why not seek a deeper answer for myself? As I grow as a photographer, I try to look out for everysingle detail in front of me, especially when shooting landscapes. Even the slightest detail captured can make or break the outcome of my photos. I have always felt that when you have a camera in your hands, you need to capture not only the moment but also the emotions that surround that moment. By enjoying life and photography, the photos you come up with will exceed your expectations and be truly worth something.
A lot of times, I have seen photographers become arrogant once they have perfected their techniques. But that should never be the way. Techniques can be continually improved and photographers should learn from and teach other fellow photographers theirdifferent techniques. There are no secret ingredients in the picture; it is about whether you invest the time, effort and the passion for it. Make the effort to read up about your camera limit and to physically test out the limits of your camera. Do not simply rely on a camera instruction manual. Photographers who earn the title of ‘Professional’ are those who came up with new ideas and techniques. I always tell myself that my efforts in photography should not stop after gaining the title of ‘Professional Photographer’. It should not stop after coming up with new techniques. I will always see myself with the title ofa ‘Learner’ because my techniques are taught by other photographers who also consider themselves as fellow ‘Learners’.
I shall not say more. Please take your time to view and enjoy my work. There are many people who have made my work possible and to which I owe my thanks to; those in my photos as well asthose who have never failed to provide me with moral support. Also I am eternally grateful to my family, who has never discouraged me from taking an interest in photography. Even though they were unable to financially assist mein my passion, I have learnt how to be hardworking and independent. Up till this point in time, my ever-growing passion in photography has served me well,in more ways than I can ever imagine.
Thank you.
