My Artist "Statement":
Sharon O'Brien Huey describes her work as "Artography", a portmanteau of "Art" (digital) and "Photography". She does not consider herself to be a photographer in the traditional sense, but her own photographs are the basis of her artwork. She uses a variety of software programs and techniques to achieve the unique, fairytale - or magical realism - quality that her work embodies.
A natural autodidactic, Sharon has no formal training in any form of art (she is the former senior editor of multiple high-profile reference books) but credits her skills and successes to her endless curiosity, hunger for knowledge, and desire to always be challenged. As a nonconformist, she fervently believes that traditional routes are not necessarily the only way to achieve goals.
She has a penchant for abandoned places; decrepit barns; and people & places with history and a story to tell.
What others may overlook is oftentimes exactly what she is drawn to.
"People don't slow down enough to look around and see the magical world they live in," she says. "I capture my photographs by taking long, aimless drives on some of the endless beautiful backroads in our area...Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland. But I am forever pulling over to let speeding cars pass me. They're going too fast to see the beauty all around that I'm seeing and I think that's sad." She needed to find a way to make people see again, to make them slow down, to pause for just a minute. That's where the fairytale, magical realism look of her artwork came from. Oftentimes, people will even say 'Oh, I know where that is!' when I make something familiar look a little bit wonky. This gets their atttention. This makes them see."
She currently resides in Delaware City with her wildly supportive husband and daughter, a couple of crazy dogs and a bevy of wildlife that provide endless entertainment and photo opportunities.
