I first encountered Ruan on slow boat to China in the 70's. He was shooting for Time (or was it National Geographic...it was one of those other libtard publications). We had a long argument over the influence of the existential movement on modern photography and drank rot gut whiskey into the dead of the night. Other than that what can I say? He has a photo stream that I envy and obviously a great eye for what will make a photo stand out as beyond ordinary.

Who else can make a bear in a mask decapitating a doll with a hatchet look as cool as Ruan can? He's a talented photographer with a great eye for interesting subjects, and his work of documenting South African life and people goes a long way towards really good and moving social documentary photography.
