A little about me

My name is Roy Elder, 16, Newington College, Sydney.

I enjoy taking photos of all things rail for a pastime, especially in rural settings, where the ambient, rural setting really helps to accentuate the role of railways against a desolate landscape.

This Flickr Account

The Account is called Rozza Rail Photography, because my nickname at school is "Rozza", and my interests lie primarily in Rail Photography.

This account has had several names in the past, such as Rozza Outer Circle, and Rozza Outer Circle Photography, however, my interests evolved over time, and the group once known as the 'Outer Circle' disbanded.

The Story

Over the years, I have taken the odd photo here or there of trains, and always had a keen interest in trains, however, it is only since 2009 that I have had my own camera.

My first camera that I was granted the privilege of owning, was my Canon Powershot somethingorother, which was a great learning curve in how to treat cameras: with immense care. This camera has long since taken residence on the shelf.

My second camera I was given was a Nikon L120. This was much more fun to play with, and did everything imaginable better than my old Canon, except for one problem: the Nikon did not have a 'Manual' mode. However, this camera was (and is!) very valuable, in that it fired much more like a DSLR, looked somewhat like a DSLR, and came with an instruction book that actually had something useful to say!

I am still proud to own this camera, and it has now become my video camera.

This year, for my birthday, the wishes were fulfilled. I was endowed with a DSLR: a Canon 1100D. This camera is very valuable to me as a photographer as it is teaching me the functions and capabilities of 'real' cameras, where the photographer takes the photo, rather than the camera deciding all the settings. I continue to learn more and more every day about this camera, and it is proving to be a fantastic learning curve!!!
