DENIAL

by George Seferis

[English translation by Edmund Keeley

and Phillip Sherrard]

On the secret seashore

white like a pigeon

we thirsted at noon;

but the water was brackish.

On the golden sand

we wrote her name;

but the sea-breeze blew

and the writing vanished.

With what spirit, what heart,

what desire and passion

we lived our life: a mistake!

So we changed our life..

The Satrapy

- K. Kavafis

Too bad that, cut out as you are

for grand and noble acts,

this unfair fate of yours

never offers encouragement, always denies you success;

that cheap habits get in your way,

pettiness, or indifference.

And how terrible the day you give in

(the day you let go and give in)

and take the road for Susa

and go to King Artaxerxes,

who, well-disposed, gives you a place at his court

and offers you satrapies and things like that—

things you don’t want at all,

though, in despair, you accept them just the same.

You long for something else, ache for other things:

praise from the Demos and the Sophists,

that hard-won, that priceless acclaim—

the Agora, the Theatre, the Crowns of Laurel.

You can’t get any of these from Artaxerxes,

you’ll never find any of these in the satrapy,

and without them, what kind of life will you live?

Translated by Edmund Keeley/Philip Sherrard

Your Power Color Is Magenta

At Your Highest:

You energize yourself and push others to suceed.

At Your Lowest:

You feel frustrated and totally overwhelmed.

In Love:

You are suprised by who you attract. You're a love magnet.

How You're Attractive:

Open and free spirited, people want to explore the world with you.

Your Eternal Question:

"What is my next source of inspiration?"

What's Your Power Color?

Karahaz says she is just a "fledgling photographer" but her wonderful photographs say otherwise! She is an excellent photographer with a keen eye for the artistic. I cannot seem to get things framed properly or even focused, or prevent my hands from shaking just at the wrong moment, but Karahaz, you have the Midas touch when it comes to pictures! Keep taking them, please, and I shall keep marking them as favorites, I promise!
