It all began when Rool arrived at the bodega drunk, bleeding profusely from the corner of his lower lip. Juán and Kim closed the door and turned off the lights. As we cowered in the dim, murky smog of cigarette smoke, he told us in drunkenly slurred French that even though the whole transaction went south, he didn't come back empty-handed. It was then that he opened his briefcase and removed a flat, wide object wrapped in a black silk cloth.
