A COMMENT ABOUT COMMENTS

I always appreciate when someone takes the time to make a comment on one of my photos. Hopefully constructive criticism will be the majority and allow me to learn and become a better photographer. Questions, humor, and just plain atta boys are also welcome. However, I do have one request to make and it was so eloquently articulated by Wendy Darling that I can not improve upon it but to say that I approve of this message. And I quote Wendy:

“Please do me and anyone else gracious enough to view my photos the favor of not posting massive, garish and annoying HTML invites and/or praise in my comments. You know what I'm talking about, don't act innocent, you've seen them: "This photo has been awarded the huge double golden bozo boob move prize on this century and beyond time!!!!!" All coupled with a big rainbow or a pony or a laughing hyena smiley faced troll or whatever....just don't do it. Not here. I appreciate the love but prefer the subtleties of actual conversation. Thanks in advance”.

Well said Wendy, (Used with permission, thanks and credit) please check out her photostream she has some amazing photos and she is funny so that’s a bonus.

My original reason for joining Flickr back in May 2006 was to have a place to display my fractal art work that I created. The name Ron’s Iterations ( www.answers.com/topic/iteration?method=26&initiator=CANS ) is derived from the term in mathematics that is at the hart of the software that is used to create fractal artwork. The other reason was to share photos with my Family.

I still have many sets that are private that are for Family and Friends.

My priorities and life circumstances have changed so an update is in order. (updated 2009 Nov 1st).

Having become somewhat of a couch potato and gained over 50lbs (somewhat? OK I admit it I am KING of the COUCH POTATOS). 12/365 Couch Potato I have started a project on Flickr where you take one self-portrait every day for a year. For me that does not mean you just take a snapshot but try to capture an image with some meaning or artistic merit, that is my goal anyway. This project has several objectives the first is an exercise in self discipline of setting a difficult goal and carrying it to completion. Second of all for me it’s about motivation to loose weight. If you spend hours every day editing and looking at a photo of yourself you are reminded every day “hey fat slob lose some weight” And thirdly it is an exercise in creativity and an opportunity to learn new skills in both capturing an image and editing to create something worthy of some modicum of admiration. Look its already working I am throwing around words like “EXERCISE” the king of couch potato would never use a word like that. Along with posting an image each day it can also serve as a kind of journal. At the end of 365 days I hope to be lesser of a man and richer for it my head filled with new found skills and self-awareness. The 365 days journey began on 2009 November 1.

Last October I was laid off from work and have had more time to dedicate to learning this thing called digital photography. I come from the “old school days” of the Cannon AE1 film 35 mm cameras, yes I am old 52.

Two of my life long passions are photography and learning new things mostly about science and how things work. Flickr is a fantastic place to pursue these pastimes.

Back in February 2009 I had the privilege of going on a photo walk with Flickr superstar Natalie Dybisz AKA Miss Aniela. Here is link to her page.

If you have not seen her work it is amazing check it out. Learning of Miss Aniela’s success story has inspired me to want to turn my passion for photography into something that I could make a living doing.

So it is with renewed interest that I have been studying and honing my photographic and editing skills. There are so many talented people here on Flickr to learn from.

My equipment (photographically speaking) is some what limited do to that not having a job thing.

I use a point and shoot Panasonic DMC-FZ28 with a close up lens and a telephoto converter. For editing its Microsoft Digital Image pro10 and I am starting to learn how to use the GIMP (poor mans Photo Shop) While I would love to have the latest and greatest professional cameras and lenses there is something to be said for being forced to be creative with what I have.

Great art is made first in the mind of the artist not by his tools.

If you happen to be in the Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson income bracket (golf another of my passions) and would like to support a struggling artist with an endowment or just buy one of my photos give me an Email. If you’re not rich yourself you are only six degrees of separation away from some one who is.

As I am working to build a portfolio of worthy images please respect my copy right. Do not use any of my photos without permission except the ones marked with creative commons license witch require to link back to my photo stream.
