Ronald Daedalus (V) – Portraits

Visit my homepage for more details of my work and an introduction to my philosophy.

Say No! to cheese. Character portraits only.

Here I'll show you some of my selected studio portraits. My aim is the reflection of characteristical moods and expressions through distinctive physiognomic qualities of the models to invoke a certain remembrance in the viewers mind.

The "characteristical aspect" is actually part of yourself, the viewer, since the pictures intend to project visions of your own coinage onto my work. Or, in other words, I try to project memories of your own onto the screen to make you feel the accompanied vibe (which comes out of your own past).

Here comes an important note: I highly appreciate criticism on my work. Not everything is just "great" or "wonderful" here. Give me some negative feedback also to help me improve, i.e. if you think a certain frame should have a better cropping tell me. If you think that a light should be more or less precise I'd like to know. Only a dialectic view helps us to find an (approached) optimum. A dialog is one way to achieve this.

In short: The lack of hypocrisy and a honest point of view are dignified – thank you.

– Ronald

Say No! to cheese. Charakter-Portraits.

Remarkable, inspiring and charasmatic!!! From the first glance at Ronalds work it's very evident that here-in lies some very special talent backed by a copious amount of skills finely balanced to create unique and wonderful art - portraits that present the subjects "soul on their sleeve". When looking at his portraits you need to remind yourself that you don't know these subjects. He captures them in such a way that each image carries a personality and displays true essence of the make up of these beings. Ronald, you have a wonderful talent - something to be very proud of!

I've immediately admired his portraits. But I could not understand the thing that did them so unique... I looked for some particular technical shrewdness and I didn't see the world living in the portrait. Finally illuminated, now I see a lot of mental recalls. Aesthetical, cultural and affective. And now I imagine Ronald, building his scene with the same fussiness of a Renaissance painter :-) I believe his works are really a beautiful, multidimensional trip.

Ronald Daedalus' ability to marry the subject to the viewer without all the emotional baggage that normally accompanies portraiture, creates a comfortable space for reflection and understanding. Bravo!

Ronald Daedalus is able to create in his pictures a direct bond between the spectator and the portrayed person. The excellent use of the light together with the force of the expressions and mainly of the glances creates a line that goes beyond the simple contemplation. The spectator has the sensation that in fact he is also being observed. The pictures are full of life and that is what I like the most of his photographs.

Ronald is one of my favorite photographers on flickr. His portraits are absolutely astonishing! A visit to his photostream is like a visit to a fine art museum. He makes the ordinary look extraordinary, and has a style that is instantly recognizable and completely his own. I have many flickr "friends" who's snapshots I enjoy; however, Ronald's photos are in a completely different class. I find them absolutely breathtaking. He has an enormous talent, and I feel very privileged to be writing his first testimonial.
