I have taken enough ordinary photographs to where I have begun looking for the unique and unusual perspective. I continue to refine my craft as much as I can. I bought a Kodak Instamatic camera in the 1960s and have been taking pictures ever since, but only in my retirement have I put an emphasis on taking better photos. Sometimes I succeed.
I volunteer and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas. I arrive early, with my camera, in search of photographs before my volunteer shift starts. I sometimes go back afterwards because I have seen something that would make a unique photograph. Something always deserves a second look and being able to get a unique photograph can be a challenge, but one that I get fully involved while doing. I make every attempt to pass on what knowledge I have come to understand. The importance of learning about the natural world cannot be understated.

I have been watching Roger grow as a photographer. He is demanding of himself technically and in terms of knowing his subjects. He plans and, as I would have said in earlier times, never wastes film. As to his subject matter, he loves nature and goes to the trouble to explain it to his Flickr viewers. Follow Roger and you will learn about flowers, insects, vertebrates and invertebrates, the night skies and much more. Roger is a master naturalist and a master photographer. He used to be my Sunday school teacher. I miss him on Sunday mornings, too.
