The International Monetary Fund reported that at least two thirds of the forty eight countries in sub-Saharan Africa have experienced acute energy crises in the last decade. The infrastructure in these countries is prone to collapse, due to the fact that it is poorly maintained, and therefore simply cannot cope with any surge in demand. Whilst many find this to be quite worrying, solutions do exist. Power pooling is one possible answer which has piqued the interest of Rode Ibru; regional systems which generate and distribute power allow countries that have high production capacities to transfer any 'extra' electricity to countries that are experiencing deficits.

Associates of Rode Ibru say that by connecting with their neighbouring nations, countries could also reap the benefits of regional investments, rather than struggling to source the funding through their own inefficient, small power sectors. Most importantly, the blackouts which have affected Zanzibar, and led to businesses shutting down, and residents paying excessive amounts for diesel, could be avoided.
