I have been balancing rocks since 2001. At that time I was living in Pennsylvania and working as a tour guide at Kentuck Knob (a Frank Lloyd Wright house). The grounds of this house contained many sculptures including an Andy Goldsworthy rock wall. I was intrigued by his art and read many of his books. I then began assembling rock stacks. Since that time I have been balancing rocks wherever I go. I have balanced rocks all over the Southwest of England, Southern California and the Boston area. I hope to continue my balancing throughout the world.
I love balancing for many reasons. Firstly I enjoy the ephemeral nature of this art. I love to watch the stacks fall with big gusts of wind, the incoming tide or tiny raindrops. The notion that I am creating art without expensive chemically laden materials also pleases me. Finally the way I experience nature while I am balancing is second only to the interesting people I meet. I hope that these pictures inspire you to create some of your own rock art!
