Welcome to my Flickr pages.

A quick overview? Here are some of my better shots, according to the Flickr community: www.fluidr.com/photos/robmillenaar/interesting

I have been taking photo's since my teens and continued to do so ever since. The camera's I've used range from small rangefinder camera's to reflex camera's from Nikon and Canon. My retired analog reflex is a Canon EOS 5. Digital photography started for me with a Minolta Dimage 7i, which I still have as a relic, but never use anymore. My current main tool is the Nikon D800, with 50mm f/1.4, a Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8, a Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR II and a Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 VR. I always shoot in raw format.

On my Flickr pages you will only find recent work, because scanning the thousands of analog photo's and slides is too daunting a task. Maybe when I'm retired...

My work gives me the opportunity to travel the world. I bring my camera wherever I go.

What I look for in images is artful and technical quality, even in common scenes. I have always called myself a landscape photographer, but lately I find myself taking more images of people, especially abroad. I search for intimate moments to capture, scenes that touch the photographer and those who view the image.

Some thoughts I'd like to share:

Something you come across frequently on Flickr are images that are dominated by heavy black frames or bars. I genuinely dislike those, because they might perhaps look acceptable on a poster sized photo on the wall, but diminish the quality of the image on a small screen, especially the small standard view in Flickr. There are simply not enough pixels there to waste on those dominating frames. What I do like is a very narrow black line around the image. It serves well to isolate the photo from a white Flickr background. I use that principle where I think it improves the viewing experience.

Another thing I find silly or annoying are those ugly big copyright notices of people who fear that they might be robbed of their artistic rights. Often that is just silly because of the poor quality of the image involved in the first place. But more importantly, to me it is like scratching up an image so that nobody wants to look at it anymore. That way you're no longer protecting your rights, but destroying your image.

And another thing: the use of added textures. There are some very tasteful examples out there, but in many cases the texture just destroys the original image. It is just another of those Flickr crazes that you see popping up now and then.

Enough already; all of this is just my own private opinion. :)

When I see an appealing image I try to acknowledge it by commenting. For assigning the favorite status to one of your images I set my standards high. I don't fav a picture out of kindness, but because it has hit a nerve in me. All images in my favorite collection are therefore truly the best of your images that I have come across.

I like Flickriver very much; it presents images in a very appealing environment: www.flickriver.com/photos/robmillenaar/. Also www.darckr.com/username?username=11236481@N00 provides a really nice overview of the gallery.
