PHOTOGRAPHY IS FIRST AND FOREMOST ABOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE. ONLY WITH YOUR EYES, NOT WITH YOUR MIND: WE HAVE TO LEAVE OUR OTHER SENSES OUT OF IT AND LEARN TO CONTROL OUR EMOTIONS. LOOKING CONSCIOUSLY MEANS PERCEIVING MORE CONSCIOUSLY. SEEING THIS ADVENTURE MAKES OUR LIVES EXCITING AND KEEPS US ON OUR TOES.

 

It is said that a good picture needs no explanation. That is true, and yet it is not true. I think a good photographer must be able to say something about his pictures and be allowed to say it. If SEEING is subjective, then I am also interested in what we cannot see in the picture. SEEING always takes place in context. Feelings, moods, and sensations can strongly influence our seeing. It is therefore (1) perspective and (2) atmosphere—both together determine what we SEE and how we perceive it. (1) is defined by the viewpoint and the direction of gaze. The image effect is naturally determined by the quality of the optics through which we look. If we combine both intelligently and sometimes courageously, we arrive at extraordinary images. For example, FROM ABOVE, from a balloon or a small airplane, which I have often used in the mountains over the past 15 years – at eye level.

But even the front row behind the circus ring can be a real experience. (1) and (2) then result in (3), an experience that HD television from the circus festival in Monte Carlo cannot convey.

 

Last but not least, I would like to mention nature photography, where animals pose a challenge. Wildlife is everywhere, but you can also find them in animal parks, zoos, and falconries. A good animal photo has something that you can hold on to, both photographically and emotionally.

 

I therefore wish you many such adventures that make our lives rich and exciting. :-)
