The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of River Protection, located in Richland, Wa., is a Federal-level organization heading cleanup efforts at the Hanford Site.

Our mission: Getting rid of decades of radioactive and chemical waste leftover from weapons production and protect the nearby Columbia River.

The Office of River Protection focuses on two projects: Cleanup of the tank farms, where the waste is buried in 177 massive underground tanks; and construction of the Waste Treatment and Immobilization (Vitrification) Facility. Once operational, the facility will process the waste, immobilize it in glass, and prepare it for safe and permanent storage.

The Office of River Protection works closely with prime contractors Washington River Protection Solutions (Tank Farms) and Bechtel National, Inc. (Waste Treatment Plant) to ensure cleanup work is done in a safe and responsible manner and that critical deadlines are met.
