From a railway family, the previous 4 generations were LSWR, SR and BR(SR).

I joined BR from school in 1977 and worked mostly in Bristol, a lot of my career was 3 spells in TOPS offices, and finishing with EWS after 8 years as a roster clerk in 2007.

Since retirement from the railway industry I have been fortunate to have four railway books published of my photos taken on the Western Region of BR in the 1980s, they have been published by Amberley.

I have scanned some of my 1970s railway snaps taken with an instamatic on trainspotting trips, they are not great, but unrepeatable now!.

In 1980 I bought a new Fujica ST605N 35mm, which was already obsolete, but simple, which I liked. I tried to visit locations with a lot of freight activity.

Most of my pictures were railway ones taken between Jan 1980 and 1986, lots of them in Bristol or Exeter, but Newton Abbot, Taunton, Newport, Cardiff and Warrington were also visited a few times.

Nearly all my trips were undertaken by train, then foot as required, a handful of later trips were made by car with a BR colleague.
