Representative John Conyers, Jr. was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1964, making him the second most senior member of the United States House of Representatives.

His election in 1964 to Michigan's then 1st Congressional District marked the first time any state had elected two African Americans to Congress at the same time. In another first, Representative Conyers was selected to be a member of the Judiciary Committee. His selection to this important committee, was a first for an African American.

In addition to this list of firsts, Representative Conyers is also the only legislator in US history to be involved as a Member of Congress in two presidential impeachments; those of President Nixon and President Clinton.

Today, Congressman Conyers continues to fight for the principles that he ran on 40 plus years ago in his first campaign, those of "jobs, justice, and peace."
