Project Exploration is a nonprofit science education organization that works to ensure that underserved communities—particularly minority youth and girls—have access to state-of-the-art science education, regardless of academic achievement.

Founded by paleontologist Paul Sereno and educator Gabrielle Lyon, Project Exploration is a place that opens the doors of science to minority youth and girls, filling a critical void in a community traditionally overlooked by science. Our dynamic, hands-on programming and interaction with

scientists changes the lives of hundreds of students each year, fostering long-term relationships with science and serving as a catalyst for developing leadership and building self-confidence.

Our students, who span all levels of academic success, are welcomed into an inclusive and nurturing community of people who are passionate about science. Youth are typically involved with Project Exploration for an average of five years; 96% of Project Exploration fieldwork participants graduate from high school. These students are three times more likely to enroll in a four-year college than their peers, and over one-third major in science. At a time when four out of five jobs require science and technology skills, Project Exploration not only provides a new model for engaging and retaining today’s youth in science—we’re actively changing the face of science.
