Services provided by The Print Studio
The Print Studio is a collaborative printmaking resource for artists, rather than a printing company. It works with individual artists, publishers and galleries from many parts of the world; the outreach is truly international. The staff are passionate about the potential of the printed mark. The work is the product of a collaborative relationship in which an artist works in tandem with the printers. The proofing is an exploratory process without frontiers; experimentation and invention are the name of the game. Combinations of media, additional hand-applied elements and innovative techniques are encouraged. Only the very best materials, papers and inks are used.
It is a very clean, orderly and tranquil place in which to work, a blank canvas. Whilst there is a weight of history behind the place, each new relationship is approached on its own terms; there is no house-style.
The Studio is located in the beautiful grounds of the National Extension College just a few minutes from Cambridge Station. There are easy connections to King's Cross in London, the M11 and London Stanstead Airport.
The processes offered are screen printing, etching and relief printing, all of which can go out to a large format. The etching press has a 7ft x 4ft bed size. Very high resolution photo processes are available in both etching and the screen process. Unique objects are often made.
Normally, artists come to the studio to evolve their images and to work directly through the proofing. It is possible for the studio director to travel, abroad if necessary, to work in the artist's own studio. It is often valuable to develop an intimate understanding of the artist's usual working practice. Artwork made away from the studio is then brought back for stencil/plate making, and proofing to instructions can commence.
It is possible to make work from many sources. Drawings or paintings on textured polyester (Mylar or Truegrain separations, etc.), a collage, a transparency, CD or other artwork may form the foundation of an original print. The studio will do whatever the artist requires. Frequently the work arrives as 'an idea' and its realisation takes place in the studio, drawn directly on a plate or emerging from a process specifically developed for the project. However, we do not like to make 'chromiste' or pseudo-reproduction prints.
We have many years experience of packing and freighting work around the world and can arrange delivery of completed work through reliable carriers.
TopCollaborative printmaking is a highly specialised activity requiring open-mindedness from the artist and great sensitivity and empathy from the printers. While it is generally accepted that the artist is the author of the work and responsible for the image and that the printer provides technical advice and helps to realise the artist's intention, the role of each participant does not have clearly defined boundaries. Each relationship is founded on trust and a mutual dependency; each is unique. These collaborations often produce work of greater creative and technical range than the artist might produce alone and frequently take the studio into new areas. This is partly because of the considerable resources that are brought to bear on each piece and because the artist is free to concentrate solely on the business of image making. Over the years many extended projects have been made. These sometimes emerge as portfolios, beautifully boxed works which may incorporate text. Such pieces may take several years to realize and be made on a range of papers.
The Studio publishes a number of editioned prints, monoprints, monotypes and portfolios each year. The object is to bring into being works of refinement and distinction in which the artist's idea is matched by the thoughtful use of materials and the medium. Great care and much time are devoted to each piece.
Framing and the making of cloth covered boxes and portfolios can be arranged.
Every project the studio undertakes is unique. Each produces its own sense of fun and its own challenges. As a result, the price that the studio charges varies with the work in question. We can provide a preliminary quote online but for a firm price we need sight of a maquette or of the artwork. Usually our prices are in sterling but we are happy to quote and bill in any currency.
