Karen Harrison, gardening since 1984, began her own Professional Garden Design business in 2002. She is the owner of Precious Petals, which performs a variety of design, maintenance, container and specialty gardening services. Since 2002, residential customers and commercial properties in Birmingham, Farmington, Farmington Hills, Livonia, Northville, Novi, Plymouth and West Bloomfield, have been the focus of Precious Petals garden design and maintenance activity. Precious Petals has now relocated to the Grand Traverse Region, as of October 2008.

Karen began studying to be a Professional Gardener in 1997, at Michigan School of Gardening, working to gain additional knowledge, hone her gardening skills and achieve her design certificate. Before starting Precious Petals, Karen worked for several other local professional gardening firms, and then chose to go out on her own.

She is an active member of the Association of Professional Gardeners, a member of the American Horticulture Society, the Practical Gardening Institute and is a “Garden Design Specialist”, through the Michigan School of Gardening. When living in Farmington, Karen’s home and her personal gardens were featured on the Farmington Hills “Garden Tour”, and on the local Cable Access Channel highly popular “Secret Garden” series segment. She is an active volunteer in many communities, providing various “gardening topic lectures” for local Garden Clubs and other non-profit organization and community events. Karen has been active on the Farmington DDA Farmers Market Pavilion Committee and has won a Farmington Hills “Beautification Award” for her design and installation work at Farmington Hills Power Middle School, which was a 6-year volunteer commitment. She also is involved in many other non-gardening volunteer community service related activities.

While Karen began her professional gardening instruction as a student of Michigan School of Gardening in 1997, she has also taken numerous Horticulture Gardening Institute classes, and continues her horticulture education, attending many gardening symposiums and lectures. She has participated in classes offered by the Michigan State University Extension Services and is a enthusiastic researcher of new practices, design concepts and plant materials. Her Fall/Winter months are spent attending Gardening and Design Classes, and working part time as a Florist/Designer. Floral activity is a year round passion for Karen.
