Thanks for visiting my photo site!
I've been an aviation enthusiast since my early teens. I
started getting interested in aviation while visiting my grandparents home in New York City. They lived within walking distance of LaGuardia Airport (LGA) where my grandmother worked for United Airlines' flight catering department. I was also fortunate to have parents working for the US Gov't. in many overseas locations. As a result of this, I spent a lot of time traveling around on all types of aircraft and visiting many airports primarily in SE Asia & Africa.
Some of the older aircraft that I have flown on are: Ford Tri-Motor, L-749 & 1049 Constellations, DC-3, 6, 7, & 8's; Convair 440, 580, 880, & 990's; DHC Caribou; Fairchild C-123 Provider; SUD Caravelle; Comet; Vickers Viscount; Lockheed Electra; Volpar Beech 18; Pilatus Turbo Porters; Helio Couriers; Dornier Do-28; Boeing 707, 727 & 737's; VC-10; C-130 and on and on.............
I remember the good ole' days when nearly all airports had open observation decks and airport managers were also aviation enthusiasts who encouraged the public to enjoy their airports, those days are certainly history now.
I started out taking photos with a Kodak Instamatic
camera using B&W film in Bangkok in the mid '60's where I was lucky enough to have very good contacts at the local Air America (ssshh!) desk who would let me out the side door onto the ramp of Don Muang Int'l Airport (BKK). This was at the time when the Vietnam war was really ramping up and the photo opportunities were superb in respect to the numerous charter airlines/aircraft ferrying troops & cargo in support of the war.
I have been thru pretty much the entire line of Canon SLR film cameras over they years and now use only DSLR's- a Canon 7D Mk.II, a Canon 7D, a Canon 40D and a Canon SX230 PowerShot.
I feel that all my long hours of patiently waiting at airports for the perfect shot of THAT airliner was finally vindicated in 2006 when I was asked by R.E.G. Davies, Curator of Air Transportation, at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum to donate to their photo archives. I have since donated over 8000 photos and continue to make regular contributions to them.
