I've been a dedicated amateur photographer most of my life. One of my greatest joys is to travel the back roads close to my home exploring the beauty that I find there.

For the past few years I've been exploring landscapes, nature and the kind and gentle Amish community that surrounds my home. I am printing my images much more these days - and that has taken me back to times spent in a darkroom. Digital photography is nice, but a print brings that image to life. It is always a thrill when a fine print emerges from the printer. I am also enjoying a renewed love of B & W photography. Thank goodness advances in digital processing and printing have brought this beautiful format back to be enjoyed once again.

I hope you enjoy my photostream. If you do, please feel free to comment - I would love to hear from you.

"Gear is good, coffee is better" ~David DuChemin

""Then God said 'Let there be light'; and there was light, God saw that the light was good...." Ever since then, photographers have been complaining about 'bad light'".

~Jay Maisel - "Light, Gesture & Color"

“To be an artist it is not necessary to make a living from our creations. Nor is it necessary to have work hanging in fine museums or the praise of critics . . . To be an artist it is necessary to live with our eyes wide open, to breathe in the colors of mountain and sky, to know the sound of leaves rustling, the smell of snow, the texture of bark . . . To be an artist is to notice every beautiful and tragic thing, to cry freely, to collect experience and shape it into forms that others can share.” — Jan Phillips

"Photography is a transformation, not a reproduction." Ernst Haas

“Dodging and burning are steps to take care of mistakes God made in establishing tonal relationships.”

— Ansel Adams

The camera doesn't make a bit of difference. All of them can record what you are seeing. But, you have to SEE.

~Ernst Haas - Comment in workshop, 1985

"When subject matter is forced to fit into preconceived patterns, there can be no freshness of vision. Following rules of composition can only lead to a tedious repetition of pictorial cliches."

~Edward Weston

"Photography is the ideal medium in which to challenge assumptions, because of all art forms, it is one people most expect to represent reality... The creative photographer grapples with these expectations, shaping or altering reality by the way he or she approaches a subject."

~ Keith A. Boas

"Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures."

- Henry Ward Beecher

Paul is a talented, incredible artist, with a generous heart, and is a very wise and dear friend. It was my great pleasure and honor to discover Paul's work when I first joined Flickr. He was one of my first contacts, and he has been a true friend since then. I so enjoy his unique, creative voice...always singing in each image. I remain in awe of his mastery of photography and his exceptional artistic interpretations of everything he photographs. I cannot view his stream, or think of him, without being reminded of the hope and promise of each new day....every day is a clean slate with no mistakes in it....from Anne of Green Gables....and Paul reminds me of this every day. He is a devoted husband, father and grandfather....and manages to share the joys of life with us in each image he posts. He is a master at photographing sunrises; each one warms my heart and reminds me to count my blessings...his friendship among them. I am a better person for it. Laura.
