I am a journalist who started out as a newspaper intern at age 14 and then stayed on at the paper as a freelance writer and photographer (while finishing school). All the money I made back then, I invested in my camera equipment - several Olympus OM-1, OM-2, and OM-4 bodies and various Olympus Zuiko lenses, plus a Minox 35 EL, and a middle format camera by the East German manufacturer Praktica.

I also had my own darkroom for black & white prints. My favorite enlargement paper was Agfa Record-Rapid (because of its warm image tone) which, unfortunately, was discontinued in the '80s (as far as I remember). My favorite 35-mm material: Kodak Tri-X Pan and Ilford 800 (for black & white prints); Kodachrome 25 and 64, plus Kodak Ektachrome Professional 200 and 400 (for color slides).

At a certain point, I concentrated on the writing part of my job and pretty much gave up on photography. (The last major magazine story which I wrote and photographed was a home story at the 'Funky Farm' of Parliament/Funkadelic's George Clinton - you can check out some photos here).

I now work as a senior editor for a German magazine which, in addition to consumer electronics, runs tests of digital cameras. This reawakened my interest in photography. You can see some of the results in my flickr photo sets.
