I practise photography out of a humble sense of awe and gratitude: for the magnificent universe which, by the grace of God, we inhabit, and for the incredible creatures who make it perpetually interesting and mysterious.
I'm not an "expert", and I know it; You don't have to tell me.
I photograph in a consciously feeble attempt to capture even a fraction of the beauty of God's handiwork.
I photograph because I enjoy it.
Whatever I photograph is how it's supposed to be for me. It's how I want it. If it's over-exposed, under-exposed, or whatever, I want it that way.
I'm not saying I don't completely mess up sometimes, but if I keep a picture, it's because I like it. Please don't tell me how it "should have been".
It's either how I want it, or it's something that I need to learn on my own.
I don't care much to do everything the "correct way".
Art is a personal expression. It's not a science.
The photos I take probably look like those of a million other people. I know this, and I don't care.
I'm realising that originality is different than I had first imagined.
Like I said, art is a personal expression.
I like the look of everything that inspired me, and taught me. If I want to emulate that, then I have the right to.
After all, we're all products of our environments; we're all amalgams of our past experiences.
"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don't bother concealing your thievery--celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: 'It's not where you take things from--it's where you take them to.""
