Phillip Sidek (°1942, Betlehem, Israel) makes films and mixed media artworks. By parodying mass media by exaggerating certain formal aspects inherent to our contemporary society, Sidek makes work that generates diverse meanings. Associations and meanings collide. Space becomes time and language becomes image.
His films directly respond to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences from the artist as a starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context. By emphasising aesthetics, he seduces the viewer into a world of ongoing equilibrium and the interval that articulates the stream of daily events. Moments are depicted that only exist to punctuate the human drama in order to clarify our existence and to find poetic meaning in everyday life.
His works are often classified as part of the new romantic movement because of the desire for the local in the unfolding globalized world. However, this reference is not intentional, as this kind of art is part of the collective memory. By referencing romanticism, grand-guignolesque black humour and symbolism, he makes works that can be seen as self-portraits. Sometimes they appear idiosyncratic and quirky, at other times, they seem typical by-products of American superabundance and marketing.
His works bear strong political references. The possibility or the dream of the annulment of a (historically or socially) fixed identity is a constant focal point. By merging several seemingly incompatible worlds into a new universe, he creates work through labour-intensive processes which can be seen explicitly as a personal exorcism ritual. They are inspired by a nineteenth-century tradition of works, in which an ideal of ‘Fulfilled Absence’ was seen as the pinnacle.
His works are saturated with obviousness, mental inertia, clichés and bad jokes. They question the coerciveness that is derived from the more profound meaning and the superficial aesthetic appearance of an image. By studying sign processes, signification and communication, he tries to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way, likes to involve the viewer in a way that is sometimes physical and believes in the idea of function following form in a work.
His works question the conditions of appearance of an image in the context of contemporary visual culture in which images, representations and ideas normally function. With a conceptual approach, he uses a visual vocabulary that addresses many different social and political issues. The work incorporates time as well as space – a fictional and experiential universe that only emerges bit by bit.
His works sometimes radiate a cold and latent violence. At times, disconcerting beauty emerges. The inherent visual seductiveness, along with the conciseness of the exhibitions, further complicates the reception of their manifold layers of meaning. Phillip Sidek currently lives and works in Berlin.

Phil, you are amazing. Sweet, professional, kind, generous that is almost never found in someone as unique and edgy as you. Your work is blowing me away. You are so special to SL, and it would be a lonelier place without you. I hope you will consider doing a series i have in mind in the next few weeks. I have do have you on my friends list, even if I am one of those people that never say hi and is all anti-social. So the pestering begins hehe. When I first met you it was during the background shoot I was doing for my submission for the Pornosophy exhibit. Even though I ended up not using you in the final product I still have some incredibly cool shots of you which I have been putting off doing because I am afraid of not doing you justice. You are a gentlemen who asked me in the most polite way to come and stand with my ass facing the camera by a sign that says 'parking in the rear' while you where wearing long johns and carrying a cane. Such a great series. No direction on what I should wear, you left that control up to me...that is so important, and that is one of the reasons that you are so incredibly unique and valuable. "Rapey-face" fake charm is so easy to do, even if pulled off extremely well, but genuine charm and personality that extends out to the viewer generously is the true testament to your character. You are outlandish, ridiculous, and perverted, but you always allow control and seem to really care about the people you work with, even if just for a short time. The older gentlemen who sweeps the ladies off their feet and does nasty things to them that they would never, ever suspect. Oh, Phil you are a dirty dog, but so damn cute no staying mad at ya. You did two pictures from the first time we met, when I was riding Karr, and I remember being astonished at how painterly and beautiful the one was. I am seeing that same treatment starting to come out in your new work and the perversion is twisted in new ways, or like a 'Where's Waldo?' book in a few of the pictures. Your portraiture is gorgeous as well. You have a unique hand and I am so proud to have been in three of your pictures, and to have pictures to work on of you. Thank you for all you bring to our sl and flickr worlds.
