I like to travel, write and take photographs. The three come together nicely.

I teach photography but consider myself more writer than photographer. What the two activities share is that besides being tools for communicating, both are also tools for thinking. We can use them, in mutually reinforcing ways, to reflect on the world about us. I think myself a good writer but visually evocative prose was never my strong point. The discipline of photography helps me find words to describe what I see.

On the other hand, with the publication of text and image now within reach for anyone with computer and internet connection, writing can enrich photography. In a world saturated with visual images, even the most accomplished photographers have moments where they question the validity of what they do. Each must find their own answers but I see valid roles for those who, combining pictures with the written word, communicate not just what they see, but what they think about it.
