The photographs in this collection are from the legacy of P.F. Valois (1941-2011) and his mother K.E. Valois-van der Bie (1899-1988). Both grew up in West Java, in the former Dutch East Indies. Mother Kitty, a Catholic schoolteacher, was born in Meester Cornelis (Jatinegara). Forty years later her son Paul came into this world during a holiday in Sydney, Australia. Until 1958 they were living in Bandung, after which they settled in the Netherlands. In the late 70s and early 80s P.F. Valois produced and published in-house some small poetry books, using the name of Underground PFV Uitgeverij.

 

De foto's uit deze collectie zijn afkomstig uit de nalatenschap van P.F. Valois (1941-2011) en diens moeder K.E. Valois-van der Bie (1899-1986). Beiden groeiden op in het westen van Java, in het voormalige Nederlands-Indië. Moeder Kitty, een katholieke schooljuf, werd geboren in Meester Cornelis (Jatinegara). Haar zoon Paul kwam veertig jaar later ter wereld tijdens een vakantie in Sydney, Australië. Tot 1958 waren zij woonachtig in Bandung, waarna zij zich in Nederland vestigden. In de late jaren '70 en begin jaren '80 produceerde en publiceerde P.F. Valois enkele kleine dichtbundels in eigen beheer, onder de naam Underground PFV Uitgeverij.

 

 

By far the most photos in this collection were presumably made by Kitty and Paul. Unfortunately, the origin of some photos from this legacy isn't that certain. It is imaginable that a few came from close family or friends. Some other pictures may be purchased at the time and are now in the public domain. Despite this uncertainty it was decided to make the best pictures accessible to a wider audience, via Flickr, because they display a portrait worthy to be preserved for future generations.

 

Veruit de meeste foto's uit deze collectie zijn vermoedelijk gemaakt door Kitty en Paul. Helaas is niet van elke foto uit de nalatenschap de oorsprong met zekerheid vast te stellen. Het is denkbaar dat een aantal foto's van naaste familieleden of vrienden afkomstig is. Enkele andere foto's zijn mogelijk toentertijd gekocht en behoren inmiddels tot het publieke domein. Ondanks deze onzekerheid is toch besloten de mooiste foto's via Flickr voor een breder publiek toegankelijk te maken, omdat zij een tijdsbeeld weergeven die het waard is voor de komende generaties bewaard te blijven.

 

 

Every so often there will be pictures posted on this Flickr account. Everyone is invited to post additional information, because the exact whereabouts of the subjects on a lot of photos aren't known for sure. It would be great if most of the pictures eventually can be linked to a geolocation. When all appropriate photographs from the collection are placed online, this will be reported on this profile page.
