I tend to classify photographs into two styles: (1) documenting something that is there and (2) creating an artistic image. I am fair to middling at #1 and have absolutely no ability whatsoever at #2. A lot of people view #1 (documenting reality) was being inferior to #2 (creating art). But I think each style has its role to play. But typically photographers tend to favor one style or the other. But the best photgraphers don't limit themselves to one or the other, but are able to combine both to create a striking image that also serves to document something special at a particular moment in time. Micahel Davis is most defintely in the catagory of photographers who combine the grace of an artist with the sensibility of an historian. His photographs document important facets of our society in a manner that draws you into the photograph not only because of the sheer beauty of the image, but also because of the importance of what is being photographed. Well done, Michael Davis. I am a better photographer for having looked at your photographs.

I like photography and I like airplanes so taking pictures of airplanes is an inevitable activity for me. But I’m simply one of those guys with a low end DSLR and lenses to match. Michael, on the other hand, is a serious photographer with equipment to match. A quick glace at his inventory of sets and one immediately recognizes the breath of Michael’s experience and talent. The truth is my sense of what makes an excellent aviation photo is in large part due to the examples found in Michael’s photostream.
