Child of God
At first glance, few would have guessed that I’m an Engineer. Or at least I’m on my way to obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Nanyang Technologicial University. Despite the hectic schedules, I’m able to juggle my time well enough to ensure that photography stil remains a large part of my life. Though I do take on several freelance projects, many of my peers know me as a “part-time student, full-time photographer”.
My successes, like many other shutter-addicts, did not come easy and I definitely did not grow up knowing I would be this obsessed with photography.
Some 5 years ago, I was like many others who wanted to take pictures that I can proudly flaunt at family dinners. I was swayed by the wonders of advertising and bought a DSLR. Yes, the purchase decision was made entirely based on the assumption that using professional equipment would automatically invigorate my shots and turn them into breathtaking, exhibition-worthy images. I was so wrong…
My DSLR became my trusted travel companion during my second visit to Xi’an, China, where I visited two orphanages with the intention of encapsulating the children’s emotions. Although I did not go home empty-handed, there was still a missing element in my images, the mise en scene was strikingly absent. I was merely treating the DSLR like any other point-and-shoot camera. In order to fully maximize the potential of my equipment, I made a self-promise to work on my photography skills.
From then on, there were no restrains to the amount of dedication I channeled into my new-found passion – I read up furiously on the techniques (i.e. composition, technical aspects etc) and more about the camera’s equipments. I was able to experiment with different styles and camera angles that worked wonders during my travel-holic days. After all, I wouldn’t want my Eiffel Tower to look identical to what everyone else had in their tiny compact cameras.
In retrospect, I’ve come a long way and photography had helped shaped my character, allowing me to see things from different perspectives. With each new project, whether local or overseas, I’m exposed to a new challenge to bring a smile to my clients’ faces. Nothing brings more joy to me than to see them teeming with satisfaction. Their silent encouragement pushes me to I continue to out do myself and take my photography to the next level.
