Paul is most famous for almost succeeding to file a patent with the US Navy for a "stealth knot" that would improve the "sneak-up-ability" of their vessels. Unfortunately for Paul, an intern happened to see the papers as the generals were about to rubber stamp it and pointed out that the "stealth knot" bore a remarkable resemblance to a piece of unknotted rope. Whilst the patent failed, Paul did succeed in persuading the generals that the intern was a threat to their national security. The intern was imprisoned in 1992 and hasn't been seen since.
