My home overlooks the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. As a result, I take a lot of photos of ships despite my main passion being aviation. To see my complete archive of photographs please visit paulthallon.smugmug.com/ where I have categorised my subject matter into folders and galleries offering a simple means of searching for specific types, dates and places.
My aviation photos go back to the 1960s. I grew up close to Glasgow Airport and spent most of my weekends and school holidays there with my many aviation-mad friends. As we got older we started to explore further afield - heading down to the Farnborough Air Show in 1972 and on organised 'spotter' coach tours with visits to Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton and other air shows then later renting cars and exploring East Anglia and the USAF bases. As the seventies came to an end I started my international trips with a summer spent in the USA exploring the likes of 'cockroach corner' at Miami and the EAA Convention at Oshkosh. My interest in aviation took me into the travel industry which allowed me to travel extensively. In the mid-80s I moved to East Anglia and then to the Gatwick area where I met my wife who previously flew for British Caledonian Airways on types as diverse as the VC-10, 707, One-Eleven and DC-10. I moved into airline IT systems development where I spent the rest of my career still allowing me extensive international travel.
At the turn of the century I moved back to Scotland and settled on the Clyde coast and my photography started to favour shipping due to my fantasic vantage point. Aviation is still my passion and I am always ready with camera when I hear an aircraft.
I hope you enjoy my photos!
