In the same way that blood courses through the vessels of Patrick’s body, photographic art also circulates and nourishes his being. Under fog or streetlights, in snow or sunshine, Patrick is out there collecting the streetscapes and landscapes of Baltimore and environs. He and his son’s adventures tirelessly discover a panoply of urban cars, buildings, signs, and weather while the rest of us are horizontal under comforter. His command of light and composition is fortunate and inspires the rest of us. How does he do it? It’s a remarkable body of work.

I've recently discovered Patrick's photostream and i must say i'm transfixed by the beauty of his photographs and the way he sees the world and tell stories. The day I discovered Patrick's work was how to find inspiration, those corners so special that only he can portray through the camera to transport us to that solitude and tranquility of that space in particular. There is a before and after Patrick, he is the one, and the rest we are all, his disciples. The work of Patrick is one of the most important works ever created, behind all his photos there is a magic and special corner, only he knows how to do it with enough pleasure to recreate it as if it were a movie, always with those classic cars and That fog that gives such a soft touch to the image, and those colors of the film of reel. He is a teacher, he makes art, he is an inventor and he has inspired many, every photo of him makes me enjoy. Thanks Patrick, there will never be enough words to thank you for your work.

I'm elated to have discovered Patrick Joust's photographs, at long last, here's a man with a camera who can wonderfully capture the every essence of Baltimore city. I've been hunting for good collections of Baltimore photos to show friends who live far away and who have never been to Baltimore, or who only know it through television, and I must confess, I compose so few comments and testimonials on Flickr, it takes something special to pull me out of my shell, however, Patrick has inspired me not only to write this testimonial, but to pull those film cameras from my dresser drawer and start shooting around Baltimore.

Much of his work reminds one of "The Wire", though I would argue these images piece together a broader, richer picture of life in that city. Congratulations to Patrick Joust, our artist of the week. Patrick Joust has long been known to the Flickr community as an advocate of vintage equipment and the quality and framing of much of his work could only be accomplished with such a collection. From fine-grain presentations of barren and abandoned urban landscapes and street photography to his studies in post-industrial decay, the camera, the film, and the darkroom chemistry have always been at the forefront, revealing their own constant flaws and struggles to retain the image. For a long time I looked at his adumbrations of his culture as avoiding figuration and the absence of people was painfully present in every frame. His work, however, has gradually become more figurative and his current work confronts the human elements of Baltimore head on. Thus his work now reveals the interaction of human beings, their ethos and their bodies, and the decaying infrastructure of their recent American ancestors. Congratulations on being Adumbrations of the Sublunary Ethos Artist of the Week!

I get a very warm feeling from Patrick's work. I find that regardless of the subject matter, his photos never fail to evoke a personal and humanistic emotion. His work in Baltimore is phenomenal and shows his well rounded skills in approach and composition. It's a photo documentary of great proportion, quality and significance. To me, I find endless inspiration and have learned through Patrick that anything is worthy of a photograph. From the mundane, to the eccentric, downtrodden or uplifting, there's always a subject for consideration. Not only can he shoot, but he's an approachable, helpful and friendly guy (though we've never met in the flesh!), and that counts for a good bit, too. Still, even if he were a jerk, the photos rock. A fantastic body of work, an absolute must to check out.

Patrick has been one of my favorite photographers on Flickr since before I became a member myself. He is that rare combination of technical expertise and raw talent. Though his subject matter is diverse, he always composes with great sensitivity for and understanding of his subjects. Patrick is a photographer’s photographer. The kind of photographer that makes the rest of us pale in comparison, while making us better.

Once you have been enjoying Patrick Joust's work for just a short time, you come to realize that he produces 'signature' images again and again. Once you have been enjoying Patrick Joust's work for just a short time, you come to realize that he produces 'signature' images again and again. Patrick has such a great eye for seeing a story in simple and sometimes quite mundane subjects. And his stories are thrillers, full of detail and unexpected twists and turns. I especially enjoy how Patrick uses his cameras - many of which are of the 'organic' (film) variety. He seems to really excel with 6x6 twin lens reflexes, many square images from which are made at or near ground level using very selective focus. But whatever the tools or subjects, Patrick's innate ability and visionary skill produces wonderful images. It is a pleasure to view his work. In the years to come, I will be able to say "I knew Patrick Joust before he published his first book, and had work selected for museums."

Patrick Joust is an incredible photographer, and one of my true favorites. I was attracted to his work going a few years back. What I saw and still see in Patrick is a true photographer. Patrick's work is genuine and real. He gets out there on the streets, day in and day out, and gets these incredibly raw and powerful images. I started out as a street photographer myself so I have a deep fondness for what Patrick does. In addition to those great images, Patrick's use of vintage old cameras, film, and developing techniques is something to marvel! :-) I am in awe of the work he produces, and Patrick's work serves as an inspiration to me. Patrick's photography is one of the highlights of Flickr. I'm always amazed at how he gets such atmosphere and mood from his street photography. I only know his home city of Baltimore as a fan of the TV show The Wire, but through Patrick's beautiful photography, I'm given a new perspective. His natural style really brings the street corners and avenues alive. Patrick's use of old film cameras is really inspiring - being a fellow film user I'm often drawn to his fine results with old gear. But whether you're a digital user or a film nut, there's many compelling reasons to come back to his photostream.

Patrick, in my "not so humble" opinion is THE premier photo-documentarian of modern Baltimore city life. His un-erring eye captures the essence of the real Baltimore. The other great one, A. Aubrey Bodine was a pictorialist at heart and failed to truly capture what Patrick seems to so easily bring to us, namely the gritty, down to earth tone of the city. The great photograph should look as if it was easily taken, never contrived or "strained". Like the home run swing of a Mickey Mantle, graceful, natural and without undue effort, Patrick just knocks them out of the park. If there is another photographer that does it better, I have yet to see his work. Patricks work is a treasure, and should have a special place in some Baltimore "Hall of Fame". I have been looking at photographs, and taking photographs for more than 45 years and I believe that Patricks work ranks with the best that I have seen. We are lucky to have him here, so that his great talent is brought to bear on the City of Baltimore.
