'Don't think, look', said Ludwig Wittgenstein.

'Colour is life; for a world without colours appears to us as dead', said Johannes Itten.

‘Everything beckons us to perceive it,

Murmurs at every turn: remember me.’

(Rainer Maria Rilke)

I was an abstract painter. Studied under Peter Lanyon and others in St Ives, Cornwall when it was avant garde and booming. l got to know Patrick Heron, Roger Hilton etc.

But I loved cinema, especially French Nouvelle Vague, Italian and British humanist films, which led to my interest in photography.

I came across Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gary Winogrand, William Klein, Robert Frank and realised they all had more life and humanity than had 'art' (whatever that means!)

I agree with HCB:

'I'm not interested in photography, I'm interested in life.'

'I'm not a photographer, I'm an anarchist ... non-violent'

'Sharpness is a bourgeois concept'

Also, inspired by Eugene Smith's anti-war photos from the Pacific in WW2, I wanted to report on my involvement in anti-military and Peace events: there's too much acceptance of aggression in the world.

I've always been a visual person. 'Words make us stupid' (I don't remember who said that).

My life is made of images.

... nonviolent anarchists of the world unite! through Patrick's images, you feel some portion of what he himself must feel, and you know that you have a friend, a connection, a glimpse, and that is exactly what we ask of a photograph ... cheers, my friend!
