I grew up in a council estate in North London throughout most of my childhood and when I wasn’t being a little scoundrel I loved to draw everything I saw and day dreamed from as young as I can remember; it was pure escapism for me.
As the years have gone by my abilities have gone from strength to strength to include sculpting and carving.
I have been working in the jewellery casting industry for over ten years and have worked with designers, artists, engineers, silversmiths, goldsmiths, hobbyists, large and small companies to help them produce their work, which has included parts for musical instruments, trophies, sculptures, models, furniture fittings and jewellery, just about anything that can be cast in fact.
Recently I have found effective ways of casting natural objects such as leaves, plants, insects and textiles which has added new dimensions and levels of detail to what is possible for jewellery making.
The experience I have had in the jewellery trade has forced my hand in terms of pushing myself, instead of just making whatever I like, I have had to work under demanding conditions to produce what is best for the customer, often pushing possibilities with very limited time frames. These have been good lessons for me and I feel have been beneficial in my progress, not just improving my skills but to have the ability to meet a deadline I feel is priceless.
I still currently work in this industry and have gotten to know many wise and knowledgeable people along the way, so, if there is something I don’t know about jewellery...I know someone that does.
I take inspiration for my work from lots of different areas; The Liquid Accessorize collection for instance, relies on me manipulating natural liquid movement to create textures normally found in water, I just love the way light bounces off of the many different ripples and curves when the piece is finished, whereas The Moody pieces are taken from the strong expressions and images in comic books I used to read as a child.
Some of the best work I have seen in any media is when the creator has put their heart and soul into it, so, I try to give my work substance and meaning from lessons I have learned in life, I want to put sentiment back into the jewellery craft.
The next step for me is produce more imaginative, unusual work and to give more and more people the satisfaction I get when I work.
Some of my favourite expressions that I try to live by...
The sky’s the limit...
If you’re not creating, you’re not living...
You can’t do anything with a compliment but you can build on criticism...
