I greatly admire commitment and the work of Minoru Karamatsu. Although we do not speak the same language his images tell me stories. He is masterful at conveying the irony of children playing in a playground by a factory; of an old man resting in a children's playground and of a bridal couple whose photos are being taken on an industrial shoreline. Minoru-san keenly observes. The images that stay with me, however, are some of the images that he took in the 1970's. The first photo that I saw in Minoru Karamatsu's photo stream was "Cold Hand". He beautifully captured the playful expressions of two boys as they breathed on their hands to warm their fingers. His image of the naughty boys playing in the alley in front of an nude poster captures their exuberance and makes me smile. These photos of children playing in the street remind of the work of the American photographer Helen Levitt. I think one of his most poignant images is his "Mother and Child Came to the City". In that image he has captured the uncomfortable, uncertainty of a country boy arriving in the big city. Thank you for sharing your vision Minoru-san. I look forward to seeing many more of your images.
