Longtime nature & wildlife photographer, many publication credits. For a dozen years I was photo columnist and features writer at Explore Magazine, and during this period (1988-2000) I developed and taught the Nature & Wildlife course at the Western Academy of Photography, in Victoria, BC. In 2005 Greystone Books (Vancouver) published my "Wild Prairie: A Photographer's Personal Journey". Publishing a book is every photographer's dream (and every dentist's dream too, according to my former dentist).

Following this, I ran a series of successful photo workshops, introducing a lot of photographers to the magnificent prairie grasslands for the first time. I discontinued these in 2013 to focus on my own work. I only take on projects that interest me. Have recently completed shooting a book on the late, great metal sculptor Jan Johnson. I continue to photograph critters at every opportunity. My knees aren't what they used to be, but I think my eyes are better than ever.

All photographs on my Flickr photostream are protected under copyright laws and international conventions. This means they cannot be copied, reproduced, republished, downloaded, displayed, modified, transmitted, licensed, transferred, sold or distributed by any means, without prior written permission from the photographer. Most of my photos are available for licensing. If you are being paid for your project and want to include my image(s), please contact me to negotiate a reasonable licensing fee.

If people add me as a contact or choose my images as favourites - but don't have any image offerings of their own, and make no effort to communicate with me - I will block them.

That said, I'm open to all sorts of exchanges with people who genuinely love photography and want to share their work. There is some stunningly good photography on display here. Time and again I am amazed at what I see.

As a longtime admirer and contact of Mr. Page, I am way overdue in providing this appreciation for his inestimable contribution to the Flickr community. Anyone who has followed James, even briefly, already knows him to be a photographer’s photographer and writer’s writer. His photostream is populated with an uninterrupted sequence of images of the highest technical excellence and visual appeal, consistently accompanied by EXIF data and compelling narrative descriptions of unequaled generosity. He shares not only the “where and how,” but also the “when and why” an image was captured and posted, in language accessible to beginners yet still instructional to even the most advanced practitioners among his audience. But beyond the instructional, James’ narrative descriptions often venture into the realms of science; history; philosophy; and beyond, all presented in an engaging combination of erudition and passion balanced with the objectivity borne of his broad range of life experience. The resulting forum with his group of dedicated followers of similar experience and passion are alone worth the investment beyond a drive-by look and like. If you take the time to dive deep into this photostream, I guarantee the effort will be richly rewarded.

James, I have just recently become aware of your photos when I happened upon "Foggy Starry Night". Since them I have been systematically viewing all of your albums and I've run short of enough accolades. Your portrayals of everyday life on the Prairies are heartwarming even in mid winter. I first became aware of the beauty of the Prairies when my son and I drove across Canada and I have since returned 4 times on birding/wildlife excursions. I have endeared myself to Southern Manitoba, Churchill, Manitoba, Saskatoon Area (looking for Whooping Cranes), Southern Sask. following the Frenchman River Valley, Val Marie, Grasslands, Cypress Hills through Southern Alberta to Waterton. Saskatchewan and in particular Grasslands hold a special spot in my soul. I have stayed at the Val Marie Hotel (an experience in itself), met Brian Trottier's sister, stayed more often at The Convent Inn (I was saddened to learn of your friend Robert's passing) and seen Grasslands in the Spring, Summer & Fall...........Do you still hold workshops and any of your books still available?.......Thank you for sharing your photos.

I "met" James a little over four years ago, having been drawn into his images which gave me an entry into how he sees and treats nature. His interests are eclectic and reflected of course in his photography. They're not all my interests and subjects, but the way he presents them makes me appreciate things that I've never noticed before. Without going to his photostream, I can still picture some images months after I've seen them, i.e., a '39 Pontiac in snow which is more than a car in a drift; a new way of looking at ice; and an enhanced appreciation for such things as wildflowers and lichen. And he introduced me to the grasslands and prairie. Whatever I see on this site, I gain and become part of his experience. Then, there's the James in comments and commentary. Full of humor - the kind that evokes a smirk, laugh, or outright laughter - and knowledge and a life that parallels that of many of the rest of ours, it's always a pleasure to see what's new and where in the world he's taking us, A day on James' site and reading his comments is like being pulled into a game of "Where's Waldo?" After all these Flickr years - one year is 15 dog years - I consider him a friend, and no longer imaginary. Now, if you'll pardon me while you peruse his images, it's time for my medication.

I'm not in awe of many people, but James is on that short list. His mastery of photography, combined with his life experiences and professional accomplishments are worthy of the highest level of respect. I look forward to seeing every new image he posts, whether freshly taken or from his extensive archives. Through his well written narratives, he has introduced me to several other fascinating people and I feel fortunate to "know" them. If a person can be partially judged by the company he keeps, then James gets judged very favorably indeed. Then there is his high degree of respect for nature and wildlife. For a fellow nature lover and photographer, that is the supreme attribute. He inspires me to keep getting out there and to keep trying to up my game. Thank you James Page! .

To be honest, I'm not much of a prairie person; that's why I love wild prairie man's photography. Through his photos, I am able to visit places I would normally never go. And even if I did live on a prairie, his photos would still stand out because he has the talent to consistently capture such pristine wildlife - the kinds of epic scenes you always hope to run into in nature but rarely encounter. SUMMARY: This guy's the best at what he does.

If you're in need of daily fresh views of the natural world then make the wild prairie man your friend as soon as you can. Focused, composed, and full of vital inspirations over what to 'capture' for our digital pleasure.
