Oscar May – b.1987, now works as a freelance photographer based in London, England.
Growing up on the Isle of Wight, Oscar took to photography at a young age, and in time developed his keen ability to capture the extremes of image; contrasting from the still and serene to the dramatic movements of the true to life. Having graduated from London College of Fashion, he has focused on fashion, portraiture and music photography, but has also gained experience in other fields, such as event, product and post-production.
Heres the story..
I've been interested in visual arts all my life, I got my first camera when i was about 8, at 12 i kinda realised there was a bit more to photography than just snap shots.. but only really took photos on holidays still. When i was 17 i got a digital compact camera, this is when i started taking it a bit more seriously. At the time I was using Paint Shop Pro alot to make random composits out of stock photos, but i found that often i couldnt find a photo just how i wanted it, so i realised, why not take my own photos, whats stopping me?
Nothing.
So i went out and started taking photos, at first i was happy to shoot anything (and i still am,) but as time has progressed i've developed a particular interest in photos with people in, especially Fashion type photos where there is a story to be seen in the image.
Soon after i had bought the camera (Olympus CX5000zoom.) I was supposed to be studying Animation, but I wasnt allowed as I had to travel to another school to go to the class, so I either had to do photography or a totally different subject, so fortunately i decided to do photography..
that was AS Photography (half an A-level) i passed with an A ;).
Then i went on to do Foundation Art, as at this time i wanted to do graphic design, just with a bit of photography in it, but after about a month on the Foundation course i'd decided that photography was definately what i wanted to do.. then in about Janurary/Feburary I was looking on the internet at University courses and found the Fashion Photography course at LCF, i thought it sounded just right, but i should stick to my current choices.. but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made to apply for the Fashion Photography degree. But the competitiveness worried me a bit because if i didnt get in, i might of had to of waited a year to apply for it again/other uni's.
But, alas, i did get in :)
My main influences to my work is Music (most types) , Film (especially Alfred Hitchcock films, and other films with interesting concepts, strong visual language etc), Life - especially the small things that most people tend not to notice, Dreams just because of the way they are so reflective of my thoughts but in a much more imaginative way that i can think in while i'm awake. Other people, often saying something totally random and i'll just think of some mad idea, thats the same with music actually :) .
