Operation Heartbeat-- run by Dr. Farhad Najam, Dr. Atif Malik, Dr.

Khalid Athar and others--was one of the first US-based groups, self

funded, from Georgetown University Hospital and other areas, to send

doctors team to earthquake ravaged areas in Pakistan. The group has

set up a M*A*S*H* Unit including an operating theater at Gadhi

Duppatta, Azad Kashmir. The group treated over 2000 patients during

the time they were they in Pakistan. They treated patients who had

tetanus, gangrene, severe shock and dehydration, post traumatic head

injury, spine paralysis, cerebral hematoma, compound fractures, and

sepsis. In addition, most of these unfortunate people lost their homes

and family members.

Our medical camp continue to be operational with volunteer physicians and

so far they have treated more than 7,000 people to date, including

surgeries. The Pakistan government has contacted our Medical Relief Unit and has

requested to setup more camps in Azad Kashmir where they have been

able to open up more roads into the difficult terrains and mountain

valleys of Kashmir.

Conservative estimates indicate that in just three of the main valleys

of Jhelum, Sarupa and Lipa, there are 200,000 to 250,000 individuals

are in urgent need of relief and medical care. There are approximately

15,000 dead, and 25,000 injured requiring immediate medical relief.

Yet only 3,000 injured and sick have been evacuated from these

regions. Now the the wethar is getting very cold and certain parts

have already experienced snow. It has been one month since the

earthquake and in these vallys there remain over 30,000 homeless

peoplewho have yet to receive any help.

Our plan is to continue our base camp in Gadhi Duppatta and setup

satellite camps in Chakoti and Chinari for our forward teams that will

also go up the mountains to treat patients. Two days ago our team

visited a village and medically treated over 100 patients who received

first time since the earthquake.

In order to undertake this new challenge our team will require

medicines, health care volunteers, ambulances and satellite phones.
