The project aims to revisit the notion of online-offline dichotomy from a linguistic and discourse analytic perspective. We aim to identify and describe some of the creative ways of remixing internet-based linguistic codes for new uses outside the online communication context, by addressing the following research questions:
1.In what ways does language use in offline public domains creatively draw upon online contexts?
2.What is the relationship between online and offline linguistic varieties? Is there a clear-cut boundary?
3.What new social meanings are attached to the offline use of internet-inspired linguistic features?
4.Are these social meanings similar or different across cultures and languages?
This exploratory study serves to (i) develop a robust methodology for the developing field of linguistic landscape, and (ii) extend our ongoing collaboration on language and literacies online (Barton & Lee, in preparation), with the expectation that findings arising from the proposed project will lead to a larger scale project examining online-offline linguistic influences in the future.
