If I can't often take the time or afford a plane ticket, I rely on Shinsuke Oda's photography to transport me to Tokyo. He sees interesting forms where others wouldn't look, and even when he's photographing places that thousands have tried to photograph such as the Shibuya junction, the Sky Tree or Tokyo Tower, his images are never clichéd. You could call him a documentary photographer, and he has even mentioned that he's interested in documenting the city before the Olympics changes things. But after looking at thousands of his pictures I believe that above all he is interested in light, form and pattern rather than some specific subject, and that this focus is inseparable from his deeply positive attitude to where he is and what he's doing. This combination allows me to project my memories and imagination easily onto his images, so that I feel engaged, not patronized. He He is also very prolific; when he goes more than a few days without uploading, I wonder what has happened. I can't imagine how he manages to take so many photographs, but his many dawn, evening and night shots suggest that he is fitting his photography around his other activities somehow.
