About me

Aside from my work as a filmmaker I am also a designer. I am currently finishing my master in architecture on the topic of non-standard architecture, which is in large part parametric and computationally driven. Film and design require both creativity and craft, neither of them are about the art alone; there are functional aspects in either of them.

My education as an architect has taught me to structure thought, to be able to abstract, a skill I use of as a filmmaker.

Show — don't tell

Oculus is Latin for eye. Without eyes one cannot watch a film, let alone make one. For us, the essence of film lays in its visual aspect: show — don't tell.

But telling is not bad per se. Sometimes telling is better and that is why this text is not a film. Film is not the solution for everything, but, if executed well, it can help tremendously to communicate a message, be it artistic or commercial. By the way, who says that it is impossible to combine the two?

We make films. Fiction films, corporate films, animations, commercials, wedding reports. But, above all: quality films. In most cases, our films are a complete product from pre- to post-production, from scenario to final cut. We cast the right actors, book the appropriate location, find the perfect music and select the best fitting voice-over to a project. We edit, add effects, (sub) titles, we make 2D and 3D animations and the renderings. And we shoot.

Cinematography is the core of filmmaking, as is pointed out by the famous director Stanley Kubrick: “...You may not have to know very much about anything else, but you must know about photography.”

We use lights, reflectors, backgrounds, think about colour schemes, image composition and after the shooting is done, we colour grade the image.

Cinematography goes a step further than photography. it is like photography on steroids: it is photography with the added dimension of time. Cinematography also comprises mise-en-scène and camera movement. A dolly push in towards the actor at the moment he has his eureka moment helps conveying that message.

The aesthetics of the image are key, indeed, but at the same time content is king. Every camera movement, the position of every light, the way an actor lifts his pink, everything is motivated. All to bring forward the message in the best possible way. This can lead to a special form, but also to the decision to not detach from conventions. Conventions are there for a reason.

We are located in Delft,(Netherlands), but we work and shoot all around Europe.

Film is a visual medium. Film is writing with light over time. Show – don’t tell.
