My name is Drew Amyot and I live in Nova Scotia, Canada.
As I continue to grow as a photographer I feel the urge to describe myself and communicate how I see through my lens. I would like to start by saying this is not a doctrine or statement on how you "should" perceive my work, but rather how I see it.
In short I view myself and my work as intrinsically inspired by the romantic era of art. Intrinsic because I have felt and have viewed the world romantically long before educating myself on the 18th century movement.
I chose to create a life where I spend my days flooded with the world's beauty. Where I live in the dizziness of life's magnificence, and have a platform to share it.
I am absolutely a visual animal, and love looking at the world. Seeing it in with my flesh and bones is breathtaking. Feeling the crisp air as the smell of nature washes over me and the sounds of the world in motion surrounds me. It is from that emotional feeling of completeness that I love capturing images.
Camera's are different then eyes. Simple things like how light fades on a wall is lost to our eyes, but brought back to life with a camera. The limitations of a camera are what creates a beauty that is unique and cannot be seen with the naked eye. Photography is a desire that comes from inside me, to capture the world as I want to see it. A romantic reality created through a lens of limitation.
Just as the romantics, I want to validate emotion. In my work I try to communicate and emphasize feelings of uncanny wonder, awe, astonishment, mystery, eeriness and more. I also hold the romantic sense that photography is both individual and about sharing subjectivity. My feelings as an individual are expressed as a photographer. Sharing my world of half-truths through optical romanticism.
